Covered Canal, Castlefield, Manchester
Details
Shot of the covered canal section at Castlefield, Manchester, this looks along the brick-lined waterway towards an arched tunnel entrance. A single light source rakes across the right wall, picking out the texture of the Victorian brickwork and casting a hard triangle of shadow across the arch. The barred gate set into the right wall adds an industrial detail and pulls the eye. The canal water is barely visible in the deep foreground shadow, letting darkness carry the lower half of the frame. Castlefield's canal infrastructure dates from the 1760s, and the masonry here looks it.
