John Rylands Library at Night, Manchester

Details

A stitched vertical panorama of the John Rylands Library on Deansgate, Manchester, shot at night from a low angle looking up along the Gothic Revival facade. Multiple frames were combined to capture the full height of the building in a single image, the extreme upward perspective emphasising the scale of Basil Champneys' 1900 design. Ground-level spotlights illuminate the lower stonework and the ornate carved detail of the windows and arches, while the upper portions of the building fade into the dark sky. The red sandstone, pointed arches, and grotesque carvings all read clearly against the night.
