Manchester Wheel Up Close, Exchange Square

Manchester Wheel Up Close, Exchange Square

From the same Exchange Square night shoot as the full-wheel long exposure, this tighter framing moves closer to the structure and looks up through the spokes and support cables. The slow shutter blurs the gondolas into sweeping arcs while the fixed steelwork of the A-frame legs stays relatively sharp. Ghostly pedestrians drift through the foreground, their movement during the long exposure reducing them to translucent silhouettes. The glass façade of the adjacent building, lit purple to the right, adds depth and frames the wheel's geometry against the lit interior beyond.

Lock 92 Overhead, Rochdale Canal, Manchester

Lock 92 Overhead, Rochdale Canal, Manchester

Shot from directly above Lock 92 on the Rochdale Canal in Manchester, this long exposure captures the rushing water as two fans of motion spreading from the lock gate. The wooden structure divides the frame symmetrically, its geometry anchoring the blur beneath it. The monochrome conversion strips away colour and lets tone and texture carry the image. A slow shutter preserves highlight detail in the water while retaining depth in the darker channels below. The overhead angle turns a piece of industrial canal infrastructure into near-abstract geometry.

Embrace the Moment, Exhibition Edit

Embrace the Moment, Exhibition Edit

The exhibition version of the award-winning Embrace the Moment, processed in Photoshop for display. The edit applies selective desaturation across the frame, stripping most of the image to monochrome while retaining colour in the traffic and police car light trails streaking through the background. The effect sharpens the contrast between the still couple at the centre and the movement of the city around them. The neon signs of the Printworks remain partially visible in the upper corners, their colour holding through the treatment.

Spinningfields at Night, Manchester

Spinningfields at Night, Manchester

A night shot looking along one of the pedestrian passages in Spinningfields, Manchester. Bare trees along the left edge are strung with festoon lights, creating a corridor of warm blue light that leads the eye towards the heritage tower visible at the end of the passage. The contrast between the modern glass and steel of the Spinningfields development on the right and the older masonry tower in the background places two eras of Manchester in the same frame. The empty passage strips the commercial district of its usual activity and lets the lighting carry the composition.

Albert's Shed, Zoom Burst, Manchester

A zoom burst of the Albert's Shed restaurant neon sign in Castlefield, Manchester. Shot on a single slow exposure, the technique involves zooming the lens from telephoto to wide while the shutter is open, tracing each light source outward from the focal centre and producing the radial streaks that appear to push the sign towards the viewer. The blue neon and the warm amber street lighting in the lower right create a colour contrast that the radial movement amplifies. The ghost outline of the sign at multiple scales is the zoom recording each frame of the movement.

Town Hall Colonnade at Night, Manchester

Town Hall Colonnade at Night, Manchester

Shot at night along the covered colonnade at the rear of Manchester Town Hall, this uses the receding line of arches to create strong perspective that pulls the eye deep into the frame. The closest arch fills the foreground, while each subsequent opening diminishes towards a vanishing point at the far end of the walkway. Ceiling-mounted lights within the colonnade provide the only light source, casting an even warm glow across the stone. The vertical format suits the height of the arches, and the slight upward tilt of the camera emphasises the scale of the stonework against the dark sky beyond.

Crane Yard at Night, Science and Industry Museum, Manchester

Crane Yard at Night, Science and Industry Museum, Manchester

An HDR night shot of the outdoor area at the Science and Industry Museum on Liverpool Road, Manchester. The image looks along an industrial overhead crane structure, its columns lit with uplighting and receding into the distance. The elliptical cutouts in the ironwork reflect Victorian weight-saving engineering. HDR processing balances the wide tonal range, holding detail in both the lit metalwork and the amber-stained sky above the roofline. The brick buildings in the background form part of the Liverpool Road Station complex, the world's oldest surviving passenger railway terminus, dating to 1830.

Covered Canal, Castlefield, Manchester

Covered Canal, Castlefield, Manchester

Shot of the covered canal section at Castlefield, Manchester, this looks along the brick-lined waterway towards an arched tunnel entrance. A single light source rakes across the right wall, picking out the texture of the Victorian brickwork and casting a hard triangle of shadow across the arch. The barred gate set into the right wall adds an industrial detail and pulls the eye. The canal water is barely visible in the deep foreground shadow, letting darkness carry the lower half of the frame. Castlefield's canal infrastructure dates from the 1760s, and the masonry here looks it.

Canal Reflections at Night, Manchester

Canal Reflections at Night, Manchester

Shot almost at water level on a Manchester canal at night, this places the camera at the surface to let reflected city light fill the entire frame. Blue neon from the nearby St Ann's Arcade signage anchors the centre, while warm amber street light bleeds in from the background. The rippled surface fragments both colour sources into curved, overlapping patterns without needing a long exposure. Structural elements at the frame edges, a concrete pillar left and a stone step right, keep the image grounded despite the abstract quality of the composition.

John Rylands Library at Night, Manchester

John Rylands Library at Night, Manchester

A stitched vertical panorama of the John Rylands Library on Deansgate, Manchester, shot at night from a low angle looking up along the Gothic Revival facade. Multiple frames were combined to capture the full height of the building in a single image, the extreme upward perspective emphasising the scale of Basil Champneys' 1900 design. Ground-level spotlights illuminate the lower stonework and the ornate carved detail of the windows and arches, while the upper portions of the building fade into the dark sky. The red sandstone, pointed arches, and grotesque carvings all read clearly against the night.

Quite an old photo, one I would like to try and take again, maybe in daylight. The reflections of the buildings surrounding the Rochdale Canal at Lock 92, near Dukes 92.
