Carved in Stone, Albert Square, Manchester
A close-up of the word 'Manchester' incised in stone on a monument in Albert Square, outside Manchester Town Hall. Shot at a shallow angle along the stone face, the raking light picks out the depth of the carved serif lettering and casts shadow into each letter, making the text read clearly against the rough stone texture.
The monochrome treatment reinforces the weight and age of the carving. Shallow depth of field softens the right side of the word, and the vertical join between two stone blocks runs through the centre of the frame. The high ISO grain visible across the stone surface complements the texture of the carving rather than working against it, a rare case where noise adds to the image.

Albert Square Fountain at Night, Manchester
A slow shutter night shot taken at fountain basin level in Albert Square, Manchester. The low angle frames a bronze gargoyle spout and the arc of water it projects across the foreground, with the lit Victorian buildings and traffic of the surrounding streets visible through it. The slow shutter softens the water into a smooth curve and captures vehicle light trails behind.
The partially visible inscription 'YEAR OF T...' on the fountain base adds a period detail, and the scattered circular bokeh in the upper frame comes from out-of-focus street lights at the chosen aperture.

T-68 Tram Over Great Bridgewater Street, Manchester
A slow shutter shot from below the Metrolink viaduct on Great Bridgewater Street, Manchester, as a T-68 tram crosses overhead. The long exposure reduces the tram to a continuous streak of white and amber light along the bridge deck, while car tail lights below trace red arcs across the road in the same frame.
The T-68 fleet has since been retired from the Manchester Metrolink network, giving the image documentary value. The truss structure of the viaduct frames the tram trail against the dark sky, with street lights creating starburst patterns at the chosen aperture.
